Thinking about heading to the water this weekend? Please take cold water safety seriously. Wearing a life jacket significantly increases chances of survival during an unexpected immersion into cold water.
When your body hits cold water, “Cold Shock” can cause dramatic changes in breathing, heart rate and blood pressure. The sudden gasp and rapid breathing alone creates a greater risk of drowning, even for confident swimmers in calm waters. Cold shock can be just as severe and dangerous from water temperatures of 50-60°F (10-15°C) as it is from water at 35°F (2°C).
For reference, here are some of the water temperatures across the region as of Thursday:
- Pacific Coast: 49.1 - 55.4°F
- Puget Sound: 51.4 - 52.0°F
- Lake Washington: 65°F
- Lake Sammamish: 68°F
- Area Rivers: 46.8 - 60°F
